Humanity has always been trapped in an existential struggle. Large beasts once hunted us. Infectious diseases ravaged our communities. Even the environment on which all life depends continually threatens us with disaster after disaster. And yet, despite all of these challenges, it is human nature that poses the greatest threat to itself. Greed, selfishness, and the primal impulse to dominate others have inflicted far more suffering than the flora and fauna ever could.
The fatal flaw of the human condition is the very ego that drives us—the false sense of identity that severs our connection to community—fabricating borders we fight so hard to protect, frontiers where we refuse to negotiate, and the primitive self we frequently struggle to overcome. We are the architects of our own peril.
