Denizens

People who live and labour in a particular place. Differs from “citizens,” which is a legal status conferred by the state — denizens includes everyone who dwells and works there, regardless of papers.

Thought leaders declare progress from their ivory towers, while denizens toil for slivers of a shrinking pie.
