Fiat order

A monetary regime in which money holds value by government decree rather than by convertibility into anything scarce. The order it imposes is political rather than economic — sustained by legal tender laws and central management, not by the discipline of redemption.

What is it about the human condition that leaves us so woefully exposed to, and often unprepared for, the twists, turns and material contradictions of the fiat order?
