Fractional reserve banking

glossary · noun

The banking practice of holding only a fraction of depositors' funds in reserve while lending the remainder — multiplying simultaneous claims on the same underlying money. The institutional engine of the masquerade: it expands the money supply on political command while presenting every new claim as though it were backed.

This masquerade has only intensified in the age of fractional reserve banking.
